Life coaching is a broad area of personal coaching which seeks to help clients maximise their potential in a personal or business environment. Some coaches will help clients focus on specific life problems or obstacles blocking someone from achieving a goal. Other coaches such as executive coaches or business coaches set out to help clients make an overall step change in their performance, often through the visualisation and setting of personal growth targets and the creation of individual plans to achieve them.
Some coaches are qualified counsellors or therapists, accredited by organisations such as the BACP or UKCP and would then be bound by the Code of Ethics and Practice demanded by these professional bodies. Other coaches are individuals who have achieved success in their personal or business lives and offer their advice and experience to help others.
