CBT or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as a therapeutic method is closely associated with depression as it has been shown to reduce symptoms of depression even in situations where drug treatment has failed. It can also help with anxiety disorders such as panic attacks, as well as phobia, bulimia, OCD and post traumatic stress disorder. Unlike many therapeutic techniques, it does not look backward at the causes of distress, but on the ‘here and now’ looking to improve the way you think (‘cognitive’) and act (‘behaviour’). It is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) for depression, advising that CBT may be offered to those experiencing mild depression on a self-help computer basis or via one to one sessions with a therapist over six to eight sessions.
